Ennis is a railroad town on the east side of Ellis County, known statewide for its spring bluebonnets and its Memorial Day polka festival. Browse Ennis homes for sale below, including historic homes, established neighborhoods and rural properties near Bardwell Lake.
Ennis began in 1871 when the Houston and Texas Central Railway built north through the area, and the town was named for railroad official Cornelius Ennis. The railroad later made Ennis its northern division headquarters, with machine shops and a roundhouse, and cotton gins and mills grew up alongside the tracks. An old chamber of commerce slogan summed it up: "Where Railroads and Cotton Fields Meet."
That history is still visible downtown, which has been revitalized through the Texas Main Street Program, and in the Templeton-McCanless Residential Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Ennis Railroad and Cultural Heritage Museum tells the town's railroad story.
In 1997 the Texas Legislature named Ennis the Official Bluebonnet City of Texas and home of the Official Texas Bluebonnet Trail. Every April, the Ennis Garden Club maps driving trails through the surrounding countryside so visitors can find the best blooms, and a Bluebonnet Trails Festival is held downtown. Over Memorial Day weekend, the National Polka Festival brings a downtown parade, polka bands, Czech food and dancing. Motorsports fans head to the Texas Motorplex drag strip. Bardwell Lake, just south of town, offers boating, fishing and camping, and Kachina Prairie preserves a piece of native Blackland Prairie.
Interstate 45 runs along the east side of Ennis and provides a straight route north to downtown Dallas. U.S. 287 curves around the south side of the city, connecting to Waxahachie and points west, and State Highway 34 cuts straight across town.
Ennis offers a wide variety of homes. Near downtown and in the historic district, buyers will find early 20th-century houses with porches, original woodwork and mature trees. Established neighborhoods offer brick ranch-style homes, and newer subdivisions have been built on the edges of town. Outside the city, rural properties with acreage and homes near Bardwell Lake are available for buyers who want more space. Ennis ISD serves the city; check the district for any property and research schools on your own. If you're just starting out, our guide to getting ready to buy can help you prepare.
