Just south of Dallas County, Ellis County combines historic courthouse towns, open Blackland Prairie farmland and expanding suburban neighborhoods. Search Ellis County homes for sale below, including in-town homes, newer subdivisions and properties with acreage.
Ellis County was created in 1849 and named for Richard Ellis, president of the 1836 convention at which Texas declared its independence. Waxahachie is the county seat, and its ornate 1897 courthouse still stands at the center of the downtown square.
Three cities anchor much of the county. Waxahachie is known for its Victorian architecture and courthouse square. Midlothian, in the northwest part of the county, sits where U.S. 67 meets U.S. 287. Ennis, on the east side along I-45, grew up around the railroad and holds the title of Official Bluebonnet City of Texas. Other communities include Red Oak, Ferris, Palmer, Italy, Maypearl, Milford and Bardwell, and parts of Ovilla, Glenn Heights, Cedar Hill, Mansfield and Grand Prairie extend into the county.
Lake Waxahachie and Bardwell Lake offer fishing, boating and lakeside parks, and Joe Pool Lake reaches into the county's northwest corner. The Ellis County Museum sits across from the courthouse in Waxahachie. Spring brings two favorite traditions: the Scarborough Renaissance Festival outside Waxahachie and the Bluebonnet Trails around Ennis. Navarro College offers classes in both Waxahachie and Midlothian.
Several major routes connect Ellis County with the rest of the Metroplex. Interstate 35E runs north through Waxahachie and Red Oak toward Dallas. Interstate 45 links Ennis, Palmer and Ferris with downtown Dallas. U.S. 287 cuts diagonally across the county from Ennis through Waxahachie and Midlothian toward Fort Worth, and U.S. 67 connects Midlothian with southwest Dallas County.
Housing in Ellis County ranges from restored Victorian homes and early 20th-century houses near the historic town squares to established brick neighborhoods, newer master-planned communities and rural properties with room for horses, livestock or a large shop. Because much of the county is still agricultural, buyers can find land outside city limits; ask early about water service, septic systems and any deed restrictions. School districts in the county include Waxahachie, Midlothian, Ennis, Red Oak, Ferris, Palmer, Maypearl, Italy, Avalon and Milford ISDs, so confirm which district serves a specific property and research schools on your own. If you're new to the process, the home buying guide is a good place to start.
