Waxahachie Homes for Sale

Known as the "Gingerbread City" for its ornate Victorian homes, Waxahachie is the county seat of Ellis County and one of the most architecturally distinctive towns in North Texas. Browse Waxahachie homes for sale below, from restored historic houses to newer neighborhoods on the edge of town.

Living in Waxahachie

Waxahachie was established as the county seat in 1850 on land donated by settler Emory W. Rogers. Its name comes from a Native American word generally said to mean "cow" or "buffalo," which is also the name of the creek that runs through town. The town grew as a railroad and cotton center, and much of that history survives in its downtown commercial buildings and residential streets.

The centerpiece is the Ellis County Courthouse, a Richardsonian Romanesque landmark of red sandstone and granite designed by architect James Riely Gordon and completed in 1897. Waxahachie's historic streets and courthouse have appeared in films including Bonnie and Clyde, Tender Mercies and Places in the Heart. Waxahachie is also known as the Crape Myrtle Capital of Texas.

Things to Do

The annual Gingerbread Trail tour opens some of the town's Victorian homes to visitors. Getzendaner Memorial Park is home to the octagonal Chautauqua Auditorium, built in 1902, and the Ellis County Museum sits across from the courthouse. Each spring, the Scarborough Renaissance Festival takes over its grounds southwest of town for a run of weekends in April and May. Lake Waxahachie, south of the city, offers fishing and camping. Higher education options include Nelson University and a Navarro College campus.

Getting Around

Interstate 35E runs along the west side of Waxahachie with a direct route north to Dallas, U.S. 287 crosses the north side toward Midlothian and Fort Worth, and U.S. 77 serves as the main road through downtown. U.S. 287 also continues southeast to Ennis. Mid-Way Regional Airport, shared with Midlothian, serves general aviation.

Homes and Neighborhoods

Waxahachie offers a housing mix that's hard to find elsewhere in the Metroplex. Near downtown, buyers can find Victorian, Queen Anne and early 20th-century homes, some carefully restored and others ready for a new owner's vision. Around them are established neighborhoods with brick ranch-style homes, while newer subdivisions and master-planned communities have been built along the highway corridors. Outside city limits, properties with acreage are common. Older homes deserve a careful inspection, so plan ahead for that step. Waxahachie ISD serves most of the city; confirm the district for any property and research schools on your own.
